Tools

Those are the tools I use and recommend.

I find them reliable and efficient.

Online Services

GoDaddy because you can’t beat a home page with women and cars :-) Their DNS management tool is powerful enough. Their other services interesting  (the free hosting by example), although I’m disappointed by their virtual servers (too slow).

Zoneedit.com, to me one of the best DNS management tool with the bulk edit. The interface is raw but efficient.

By using a Google Account

  • Google Analytics
  • Google Webmaster
  • Blogger as a tweets backup and its OpenID feature with your own domain, e.g. blogger.tibo-cut.com
  • Adwords? Only to give a occasional boost  and when your site already attract 50 unique visitors per day.

By using a Google Apps Account

  • Gmail using your own domain name, e.g. thibault@tibowork.net
  • Google Docs spreadsheet

By using a WordPress.com Account

Ping.fm to publish the same content at different places at the same time.

280Slides to drop ideas and make nice presentations and because I love the Objective-J / Capuccino framework.

Tagadab I’m very happy by their virtual servers.

Server Density Their script you install on your server for monitoring just work.

Delicious , the bookmarks management service. Who need to sync their bookmarks?

Smush.it to optimize images

DropBox* , the only way to get 50GB online always in sync with all your computers.

RescueTime* , you can try all those tracking time application for freelancers, but none of them beat RescueTime. It tracks instantly and silently all frontmost activity from your PC or Mac. No, it’s not a Big Brother thingy because RescueTime help you at every stage to be in control of your time spent in front of your computer.

Software

On the server

  • Linux, Centos or Sun Solaris.
  • Apache 2
  • WordPress, a very flexible online publishing tool so far.
Although I don’t like PHP nor MySQL, I am delighted every day by their usage through WordPress.
There is many plug-ins and themes (K2, Thesis) that I’ll publish here or on the “Thanks” page.
  • ServerDensity to monitor the server (healthy checks, faults, etc.).

On the desktop

Mac

Windows

  • Windows XP (yep, haven’t moved yet to Vista but I promise I’ll move to Windows 7)
  • Internet Explorer 8
  • Google Chrome (default browser)
  • Safari 4
  • Firefox 3.5.x + firebug + adblock + delicious
  • Adobe Audible
  • etc.

Fedora

  • Firefox
  • Sugar interface. I’m sad this adventure dies though.
  • etc.

Beagle Board

  • Who need another media entertainement system when you can have a BeagleBoard with nth code player?
  • etc.

Notice for people who know how to take control of their computer:

I recommend to use a modern browser when you use this website.
By modern I mean the ones able to understand  HTML 5 and display the new CSS attributes like downloadable fonts, svg, css-transform & transitions, multicolumn, etc.
Here the latest browsers you can download and install:

By the way, if your browser display some boxes instead of fancy symbols you may need to install a proper Unicode font. Check the Unicode.org website…
